A 1950s Heritage Hotel in Mbale

Mount Elgon Hotel & Spa

The hotel’s white 1950s facade at dusk, its central arch lit gold beneath a violet sky.

We are Mount Elgon Hotel & Spa, in Mbale, Eastern Uganda, in a building that dates from the 1950s. We run a full-service property rather than a room-only hotel: 44 rooms, a restaurant, two bars, a spa, an outdoor pool, landscaped gardens and conference facilities, all on one site at Plot 30, Masaba Road.

In short. A restored 1950s hotel in Mbale, minutes from the central business district and at the foothills of Mount Elgon. We work as a city hotel for business and government travel, as a conference venue, and as the base guests come back to after Mount Elgon, Sipi Falls and Wanale.

A 1950s Building, Restored

Our building dates from the 1950s and is one of the older landmarks in Mbale. We completed a major restoration in 2026, renewing the structure and the services while keeping the architectural character, the arcades and the ambience intact. The property sits among mature trees and landscaped grounds, and that garden setting runs through everything we do: dining, drinks, spa time, conference breaks and wedding ceremonies all use it.

A hotel corridor hung with a row of old cowbells above framed archive photographs, running over a black-and-white chequerboard floor.
The chequerboard corridor and its cowbells were kept through the restoration rather than replaced.

The fuller account is on our history page.

Where We Are

Mbale is the principal city base for Mount Elgon travel. We are in a leafy part of the city, minutes from the central business district, at the foothills of the mountain. Kampala to Mbale is roughly 225 km and about four to five hours by road along the Kampala–Jinja corridor. Entebbe International Airport is the main international gateway, with onward travel to us normally by road.

See the Mbale travel guide and Kampala to Mbale for the practical detail, including where Jinja and the Source of the Nile fit on the way.

What Is on the Property

The hotel’s arcaded two-storey wings lit at dusk, seen across the lawn past garden tables and a stone path.
Both wings turn inward onto the garden, which is why so few rooms face a road.

Who Stays With Us

Business travellers who need a desk, Wi-Fi and a city location. Conference delegates on residential programmes who meet, dine and sleep on one property. Leisure travellers using the pool, gardens, spa and restaurant. Hikers using Mbale as a base before and after Mount Elgon, Sipi Falls or Wanale Ridge. And a good number of Mbale residents who use the restaurant, the bars and Kwetu Spa without staying over.

A long buttoned sofa and armchairs in the lobby lounge, set beneath a wall of tall windows looking out to the garden.
Most arrivals wait here, and a good number of the day’s meetings happen here too.

Planning note. We handle rates, availability, check-in and check-out times and cancellation terms by enquiry rather than on a live rate calendar, because what we can offer depends on your dates and on what else is running on the property that week. Send us your dates and we will confirm the current position.
