Food & Drinks

Dining tables and cane chairs along the arched veranda, hills visible through the openings.

Food and drink are a large part of what we do. We run one restaurant, Masaaba Restaurant, and two bars, the 1950s Bar and Roots Bar, plus service around the landscaped gardens and the pool.

In short. Masaaba Restaurant serves continental, Indian and Asian-inspired, African and Ugandan dishes in a garden-facing setting, à la carte or buffet depending on occupancy and season. Two bars and outdoor service cover drinks, coffee and light bites. We keep vegetarian and vegan-friendly options on the menu.

Masaaba Restaurant

Our main dining room, used by resident guests, visitors from Mbale, conference groups and event guests. Breakfast runs to fresh tropical fruit, cereals, pastries, eggs prepared to order, sausages, pancakes, tea and freshly brewed Ugandan coffee, and is included for guests in our Deluxe Rooms and Executive Suites.

At lunch and dinner we cook grilled meats, fresh fish, curries, pasta and seasonal vegetable dishes, using ingredients from Eastern Uganda wherever we can get them. The Ugandan dishes on our menu include matooke, groundnut sauce, luwombo — meat or chicken slow-steamed in banana leaves — and posho with fresh vegetables.

A laid table on the restaurant veranda, looking out through a tall arch to a wooded ridge beyond the garden.
The veranda tables face the ridge; the light on them changes completely between lunch and dinner.

Full detail on our restaurant page, plus business lunch, private dining and date night.

1950s Bar

The more heritage-driven of our two bars, furnished to suit the age of the building. Cocktails, wine, spirits and local drinks.

The 1950s Bar: a polished timber counter and stools backed by lit shelves of spirits, with leather armchairs in front.
The counter, the herringbone floor and the club chairs all came with the building.

Roots Bar

Our relaxed but livelier social space, in a garden setting: signature cocktails, local beers, fresh juices and premium spirits. Both bars are covered on our bars page.

The open-sided Roots Bar under a slatted timber ceiling, its stone counter and cane seating looking out to the pool and the hills.
Roots Bar opens straight onto the pool terrace, which is where most of its trade happens.

Across the Bars and Lounges

  • Local and international beers.
  • South African and European wines.
  • Premium spirits and cocktails.
  • Fresh fruit juices.
  • Smoothies and mocktails.

Poolside and Garden Service

We serve coffee, light bites, afternoon drinks and sundowners around the landscaped gardens and the pool. Herbal teas, infused water and light refreshments come with treatments at Kwetu Spa.

Call ahead. We do not print the full menu, current prices, service hours or dress code here, because the kitchen works to the day’s occupancy and menu cycle and a fixed list online would mislead you. Ring us for the current position, especially if you are coming in as a non-resident or with a group.
